Welcome to Compeer of Tuscaloosa!

Compeer is a non profit organization of the Mental Health Association of Tuscaloosa County. Its purpose is to unite people receiving mental health services with volunteers to spend one hour a week talking, sharing a cup of coffee, or watching a movie. It's as simple as being a friend.

"I was a Compeer volunteer before I knew I was one," says Mary, a volunteer with the Tuscaloosa program since its beginning.

In 1983, Mary, a music therapist at Bryce Hospital, became friends with one of her patients. As their friendship grew, Mary began to take her friends on outings away from the hospital. After the patient's release the following year, the two remained friends.

Later, in 1989 Mary found that a national organization providing these same services already existed, and she became one of the founding members of the Compeer program in Tuscaloosa.
