General Questions
- Why should I choose dbTech to host my web site?
- db Technology has been around as an electronics engineering and design firm since the 1980s (check us out on Dunn and Bradstreet). dbTech was started in August 1994 on a test basis and went live in February of 1995 offering the full gambit of Internet services. db Technology brings a wealth of technical experience and expertise to the table.
- Other companies claim to have huge fiber connections, OC3s, OC12s, DS3s and all kinds of terms I am not familiar with. What do you have?
- While some companies make wild (and often unsubstantiated) claims regarding their backbone capacity, our policy is simple. We always keep backbone capacity in excess of demand. This is how it works in the real world. We normally maintain backbone capacity 100% greater than average load (2 times average load). As soon as we see peaks at approximately 80% of our capacity, we add additional bandwidth. Additionally, we maintain multiple redundant, geographically divergent backbone connections. This way, we prevent two common modes of failure. First, since we don't have a single point of failure, we can't go down due to having a single point of failure. Secondly, having geographically divergent paths means that when there is an Internet wide backbone issue, we can usually route around it. Do we have fiber? Yep, lots of it, but that means absolutely nothing to you unless it works, serves your web pages quickly and has minimum downtime.
- I have heard of other web hosting services starting up and then disappearing overnight. How do I know you are going to last?
- We are financially stable. We have been in business for almost 14 years. We operate at a profit; we don't play "loss leader" bait and switch games. We are honest and upfront people with a long-term reputation for excellence. We have a lot of experience at providing high end services at a reasonable cost. Any business that sells its products at or below cost has ulterior, possibly malicious intentions. It may be as simple as to get you hooked and then raise prices later, or a "nickel and dime" you to death type of operation. With us it is very simple and clear - What you see, is what you get. No shell game, no nonsense. Honest value and performance for your dollar.
- Why is it that some services offer the very latest gizmos and you don't?
- Pain. It is painful for the customer for us to play with the absolute latest up to the second products. It can be suicide for us and death for our customer's clients. We will always support new technology, but only after it has reached a point of reasonable stability. The worst nightmare we can imagine would be some suddenly popular "flash in the pan" software that wrecked our customer's use of their sites. So, we don't play that game. Again, our goal is reliability, service and performance.
- I hear you people host some large-scale e-commerce sites. Do you mind telling me who they are?
- Not to give you a smart answer, but yes and yes. We value the privacy of our customers. We have asked a few if they would be willing to post letters regarding our services. That link will appear here soon.
- Is it true that some of the larger e-commerce sites you host have their own custom hardware?
- Yes. We offer everything from web hosting to custom design services. A customer may use our servers for a simple virtual web site; they may choose to use one of our dedicated web servers whereby the entire system is at their disposal. In higher demand services, we can custom-design a complete turnkey system that exactly fits the needs of a client. This makes us a one-stop shop. You can start here, and grow here and grow some more. Our expertise allows us to meet your needs no matter what your starting point or requirements are.
- Why don't you use Windows for your web services?
- That is a subject that has no doubt started many "holy wars". We are not opposed to hosting NT servers. In our experience, the various Unix-based operating systems are far more robust and handle much higher service loads than Microsoft-based servers. We gladly accept Windows servers for our collocation services, but we don't use them for our web services. FrontPage support IS available, however, on our Unix servers.
- Why don't you have a reseller program?
- There is nothing to prevent a client from reselling our services. The client is, however, completely responsible for site according to our terms of service. The reason we don't have some scheme set up where we try to hide our true identity is that we believe in selling direct and letting the client or reseller be responsible for making sure that *their* services are marketable. This reduces grief for the reseller and the end user. We do NOT, ever, contact the end user of a site, only the account holder. This way, your customer IS your customer and we won't run over you trying to cut you out of the loop. It isn't the way we do business.
- I had a friend call you who was designing my site for me. All they needed was the password for the site. Why wouldn't you give it to them?
- We will only issue information about your site directly to you. In the case of a password, we will further verify that you are who you say you are. We aren't trying to be difficult. What we are trying to do is protect you! The account holder is the only person we will discuss your account with. This keeps your information safe and makes life a bit more difficult for thieves.
- I changed my password as soon as I logged on to my new site. Why do you give out such difficult passwords?
- We encourage you to keep the password we assigned you, or to create a new one that will be equally difficult to guess. Passwords using whole or parts of words are easy to guess. Even a password such as "LuVMyDog" is an easy target. "Nonsense" passwords are the most difficult to break.
